This is one of those topics that is frequently debated and a lot of people are wrongly informed.

So let's set the record straight once and for all!

How old do you have to be to get tattooed?

Whilst the answer to this question varies from country to country, we will be focusing on the UK law as that's where I am based.

To be tattooed in the UK you MUST be at least 18 years old.

This has been written into UK law since the 16th May 1969 when the 'Tattooing Of Minors Act' was passed.

But can you get tattooed under 18 with parental consent? I was told I can.

The answer is simply no. (Not in the UK)

I know it's not what many people want to hear but it is breaking the law and a criminal offence for the artist to do so.

The reason you've heard this is because back in the day a lot of studios would tattoo underage people fairly often, so the rumour spread that this was allowed.

That doesn't mean it was right and it definitely wasn't legal.

Thankfully the industry is moving forward and it's becoming safer and a lot more professional than it was 20-30 years or so ago.

There are still some artists that will tattoo people underage. But ask yourself... if they're willing to break the law and tattoo a minor, what other laws are they breaking?

They might not be insured. They might cut corners with hygiene practices or use unregulated products, both of which put you at extra risk (Remember: this is a procedure which opens your skin and inserts a substance). They also might not be very good at tattooing. Most of the decent, skilled tattoo artists won't tattoo anyone underage.

So... is it really worth it?

What to do if you're not 18 but want a tattoo?

My advice is research an artist that tattoos in the style you like, make sure they work in a reputable studio and then book your tattoo appointment for your 18th birthday. Most studios will allow you to book in advance to be tattooed on or just after your birthday. That way you have something to look forward to and a special way to remember your 18th!

But make sure you have valid photo ID ready for the appointment date! (Provisional/Full Driving License or a valid Passport are perfect).

Has this been helpful?

I hope you found the answer you were looking for on this page!

Leave a comment letting me know what you thought was legal! And if you're from another country let me know what age your laws allow.
